Heavy Metal in Baghdad (SIFF 2008)

Rating: 9

Acrassicauda is Iraq's only heavy metal band. If they grow their hair out for proper headbanging, they risk death. Their fans put themselves in harm's way just to attend a gig. The movie is about war and artistic expression and many other things, like the plight of Iraqi refugees and the fact that they're routinely denied visas to the states or Europe. I learned from their blog that because of the visa situation they have been unable to attend any of the screenings of the movie, which is gaining a reputation at major film festivals such as Seattle, Toronto and Berlin. I hope attention to the film will allow its subjects to escape from their desperate situation. The movie's terrific, and so is the band.
