Sad to day how disappointed I was. As a devoted PT Anderson fan and closet Scientology conspiracy theory observer I guess my hopes were a bit high. Having said that, cinematography was stellar, music gorgeous and performances captivating. Though Joaquin is getting high props for his work, his presence was so unpleasant I couldn't wait for him to exit the screen. The jury's still out on whether that constitutes a great performance or an overwrought one.

That's exactly how I feel about Joaquin in Gladiator. The guy isn't charismatic. In order for people to pay attention to your acting chops, you have to be inherently likable.
It's all very subjective and many people I admire were wowed by Joaquin. I have liked him in some roles and though I love a good morally ambiguious anti-hero in the spirit of Tony Soprano I wasn't feeling this one.
As for Gladiator, I'm glad Ridley Scott bounced back from that. He's one of the best.
